REI Campware Polypropylene Cup

A while back I purchased 2 of these REI Campware Polypropylene Cups (1 for me and 1 for my wife). There are 4 reasons that I purchased these cups:

  1. Pretty light-weight (listed at 2.5 oz ~ measured at 1.85 oz)
  2. Made of Polypropylene = will not burn my lips or fingers!
  3. Graduated markings inside. (Great for measuring water for FBC)
  4. Cheap. ($1.95)

Before I purchased these I used some of the baked ceramic cups from Wal-Mart. These were fairly inexpensive (~$4) but a little heavier (4.3 oz). The ceramic cups held a little more than the REI cups, however this was the only advantage and it is not a good enough reason for me to keep them. (I will however miss the clanking noise from when they were hanging on my pack…)

After this I purchased a 10 cm Imusa mug. The mug had a larger volume than the REI cup, and it only weighed 2.5 oz. However, my beef with this is that the Imusa mug is made of aluminum. When the mug gets hot, it gets hot and stays that way for a while. This means burnt lips and fingers. Of course the great thing about the Imusa mug is that it can double as a cook pot.

So, when I came across these cups I thought that they would be a great cup to have. Inexpensive, light, does not heat up and I can measure out water with it. Since I purchased them I have used mine about 6 times. I have been pleased with it. The only thing that I would add is a small pour spout on the side so that when I am pouring water into a small space such as a Ziploc bag, it will pour much smoother and I will be able to control it a little better. This said, I have yet to spill any water, but I do have to be careful when pouring.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this cup to anyone. It works, and it is so inexpensive you won’t even know you spent anything on it!

About Stick

My blog is essentially a record of my hiking career. Through it, I, and others, can see how I have evolved from a heavy weight backpacker, to a smarter, more efficient, lightweight backpacker. Through the use of video, still photos, and of course writing, one can see my progression, as well as check out some of the places I hike, and not to mention some cool, lightweight gear options. For me, my blog is a journal, but for others, I hope that it is an interactive learning tool to aid them in their own progression towards lightweight backpacking.
