Mont-Bell UL Down Inner Parka

As much as I hated to see my Mont-Bell UL Down Inner Jacket go, I felt that it was only right to do so. Now that I am really focusing on my AT thru hike in 2013, when I make a gear purchase, I am really asking myself, “Is this something I will want to use for my thru hike?” And while I think that the UL Down Inner jacket would have been ok for the hike, I figure the Parka will be just a little better, and for only 2 oz more. So, I swallowed my pride, and returned the jacket for the Parka…

About Stick

My blog is essentially a record of my hiking career. Through it, I, and others, can see how I have evolved from a heavy weight backpacker, to a smarter, more efficient, lightweight backpacker. Through the use of video, still photos, and of course writing, one can see my progression, as well as check out some of the places I hike, and not to mention some cool, lightweight gear options. For me, my blog is a journal, but for others, I hope that it is an interactive learning tool to aid them in their own progression towards lightweight backpacking.

    Hi Chad,
I know you filmed the review a couple of years ago but I happen to be looking at the same jacket today. I’m curious to know if you have used it as an outer garment while backpacking and if so, how is the shell holding up under your pack shoulder straps and waist belt? Thanks for the terrific reviews……

      Bob,

I have been using this parka since I picked it up, however, never really as an outer layer while backpacking. In my area, there is just no way that I could actually hike with a pack on and in a down top layer… I would be too hot.

Saying that, I can’t say that I would recommend doing too much backpacking with this parka as my outer layer. I don’t think that it could stand up to repeated use in this manner… If you are interested in actually backpacking while wearing a down jacket, I know that Montbell makes some other down jackets and parkas with reinforced shoulder areas. This should be better for that…

Hope this helps some, and thanks for stopping by and commenting!
