Piney Grove Camping Trip

The family and I packed the truck up Friday afternoon and headed to Piney Grove for a night of camping. Also, our buddy Troy met us a few hours later and stayed the night with us. We stayed at camp site # 109 which has become our favorite spot at this campground. As can be seen in the pics below, it is pretty much right on the water which is nice.

We arrived and did the typical routine camp set-up. We decided not to put the fly on our REI Kingdom 4 tent since the skies were clear and the only rain forecast was not until the afternoon of the next day. Then we sat back and enjoyed the view.

The kids hoped along, from rock to rock, and even though we told them not to go more than ankle-deep they still managed to make their way back to us with their clothes wet up to their chest…head hung low…  🙂

Just before dark we got the grill going so that the kids could roast some hot dogs and then we got our food going. Later, once we all ate we got the fire pit going and the kids roasted marshmallows…

Night time approached and we tried to get the kids calmed down a little and then cleaned up. Once we all got cleaned up we hit the sack. Of course though, I kept talking and keeping everyone up…

The night sky was great. The moon and the stars shown brightly and laying back in our tent I was able to look straight up and stare at them. A nice breeze was blowing, however, we still had our box fan turned on inside the tent.

I awoke during the middle of the night to answer the call of nature when I found my buddy in a deep sleep on the ground next to the fire. So, I gently woke him up and urged him to go to his tent… 🙂

The next morning was a little overcast, however we were still able to catch glimpses of the sun rising up over the lake. Soon after I got up and started shuffling around and talking with Troy, my wife and kids started getting up, one at a time. I got some water boiling for a cup of coffee and then made the kids some eggs and bacon for breakfast, and then some breakfast skillet mix (eggs, sausage, potatoes, onions and peppers) for the rest of us.After we all ate and got cleaned up we sat around again and watched the kids skip from rock to rock. We didn’t have plans to stay another night so we went ahead and got most of our stuff cleaned up and ready to be packed up. Then we felt some rain…

It was only a few drops, but the overcast sky above looked like it promised more. So, we decided to go ahead and get the tents taken down and get everything packed back up into the truck. Once we did that, naturally, the sky cleared up. So, we took the kids up to the playground and let them play for a while. After about an hour (or at least it seemed) we headed back down to the campsite. We made sure everything was up and clean and then we headed out.

We came back home and set up the tents in our yard and camped out again last night…

About Stick

My blog is essentially a record of my hiking career. Through it, I, and others, can see how I have evolved from a heavy weight backpacker, to a smarter, more efficient, lightweight backpacker. Through the use of video, still photos, and of course writing, one can see my progression, as well as check out some of the places I hike, and not to mention some cool, lightweight gear options. For me, my blog is a journal, but for others, I hope that it is an interactive learning tool to aid them in their own progression towards lightweight backpacking.

I wanted to stay at Piney Grove the second night but we didn’t have all the food or clothes to change in so we just came back home. Besides, the ranger spoke with us the night before and said that they were closing the gates Sunday at 3. So, we came home and set up. That is the nice thing about having a yard! (We didn’t have one at the apartment…) And my wife opted for the bed inside. That was fine, after all the kids went to bed my buddy and I sat up talking till almost 2 in the morning.

Hope that your next trip to Hanging Rock goes better than your last one!
